Elekala Duotone

I made this image of Elekala Falls this past autumn in Blackwater State Park, West Virginia. Just recently I purchased Adobe Lightroom and must say it is an amazing software program. I have been importing all of my digital images for cataloging and keywording. In addition, I have been able to go back and re-process old raw files from the past couple of years. This image was developed as a Duotone with minor contrast and saturation adjustments. Enjoy, Joe.

Oak Leaf in Ice

I found this Oak Leaf just the other day while shooting along the Blackwater River on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The Blackwater is a tidal river and provides an important refuge to migrating birds along the Chesapeake Bay. While I was working on capturing some morning scenics, I came across this wonderful little scene.

Ice Crystals

I met up with my friend and fellow nature photographer Chris Kayler for a quick shoot in Great Falls National Park before heading over to Meadowlark Gardens to give a lecture on "Winter Nature Photography Techniques". The light was rather drab, so I turned my attention to recording macro images along the many frozen pools of water on the banks of the Potomac River. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. Joe

Abstact forest in any season

Before the entrance to New Germany State Park is a beautiful stand of pine trees. I often visit this location when I am out and about in Western Maryland. I find that the graphic shape of the slender vertical trunks provides a great opportunity for abstract images in any season. These 2 images were both made with a multiple exposure technique. I hand held my camera fitted with a 70-200mm zoom and slightly panned upward over the course of 10 exposures. As you can see this creates a beautiful impressionistic image.

The first image was made this past fall and the latter last week in the dead of winter. I like both and I feel that they have a completely different feel due to the light and the season. What do think?

Small Worlds #2

Another ice abstract from this past week in Western Maryland. I made this image along with the previous post in the same small pool of water. The many ice bubbles and fractures provided for countless photo ops. Hope you enjoy. Joe

Small Worlds

I took a trip out to Swallow Falls and New Germany State Parks anticipating some great photo ops. The weather this week has finally turned cold and it has been snowing on and off in Western Maryland all week. Here is my first shot from the trip. I found a small pool of water on a large boulder on the banks of the Youghiogheny River. Although I was intending on getting shots of the falls, I decided to turn my attention to recording all of the great ice formations along the rivers edge. I always try to make an effort to look at the ground as I am out shooting. Some of the best shots you will find are often right below your feet.

I will post some more images from the trip over the next few days. Enjoy! Joe
